Celebrations and School

One of the larger stone spheres.

Costa Rica celebrates their Independence Day in September with music and parades.  We wanted to learn more about our host country and our friend, Laura, offered to take us to the National Museum.  Originally the museum served as the fort that defended the city of San Jose and some of its exhibits were about the fort’s history.   There was also a butterfly pavilion, a sugar refinery, and many archeological artifacts including mysterious stone spheres which were found throughout Costa Rica.

The neon lime and mint beverage.

After the tour we ate at a popular Tico restaurant.  The “plate of the day” included meat, rice, beans and salad.  We drank a refreshing lime and mint beverage.  The photo doesn’t do it justice.  It’s neon green!

I (Paul) had a good report at my last neurology appointment.  My doctor gave me permission to drive a car!  That is reason for celebration.  During September I am borrowing a missionary’s car and hope to help out at our ministry center, Centro Emanuel in Paso Marcos.  The shop and landscaping both need attention and those are right up my alley.  Hopefully this will give us both an opportunity to get to know the people in the community and on the Cabécar reservation better.

Megan teaching Bible.
I (Bridget) would like to visit the schools near Paso Marcos and maybe help teach English classes.  For the past five months I have been helping a missionary, Megan Crowe, teach English as a second language in La Carpio, a slum near San Jose’s dump where Nicaraguan immigrants live.  Megan uses Bible stories, games, songs, dialogues, etc. to reinforce what the students are learning in school, thereby helping the children pass their English classes. Many of them are blooming under Megan’s attention and tutelage.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.  My (Bridget) brother was diagnosed with cancer and is deteriorating rapidly and so I am in Oregon visiting him and his family.  Prayer for him and his family is very much appreciated.

Serving Him,
Paul & Bridget Abbott
